In the media, a theory has been put forward as to why tenders in Kazakhstan's road construction sector are increasingly being awarded to foreign companies, which, on top of that, offer no guarantee of meeting deadlines or quality of work. Meanwhile, domestic companies are being left "out in the cold". It is suggested that the reason is simply a lack of state funds.

The Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan has put forward the first draft of a proposal to reduce the area of the Irgiz-Turgai State Nature Reserve for public discussion. The department intends to reduce the reserve by more than 20,000 hectares, reclassifying these lands as "reserve lands".
