President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has sent a telegram of condolences to the acting president of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez, following two powerful earthquakes that killed hundreds of people and injured thousands.

WHAT THE TELEGRAM SAYS

Kassym-Jomart Tokayev expressed support for the leadership and people of Venezuela in connection with the consequences of the natural disaster.

"At this difficult time, sharing the pain of irreparable loss, I extend my condolences to you, the families who have lost loved ones, and to all the friendly people of Venezuela," the telegram reads.

The president also wished a speedy recovery to those affected, and strength and fortitude to the families of the deceased.

WHAT HAPPENED

On 24 June, Venezuela was struck by two strong earthquakes just one minute apart. According to information from the United States Geological Survey, the magnitude of the first tremor was 7.1, and the second was 7.5.

The first epicentre was located west of the city of Morón, approximately 168 km from Caracas, at a depth of 13 km. The second tremor occurred at a depth of 10 km, with its epicentre situated 16 km southwest of Morón.

It is noted that the possible number of casualties from the disaster could range from 10,000 to 100,000 people.

AFTERMATH OF THE EARTHQUAKES

According to the latest data from CNN, the death toll has reached 235 people, with a further 4,300 injured.

It is reported that buildings have collapsed in Caracas. Many people remain missing or are trapped under the rubble, and rescue efforts are ongoing.

The earthquakes were among the most powerful to hit Venezuela in more than a century.
