Passengers on Kazakhstani trains will be able to message for free on messengers, but will have to pay separately to send voice messages, view photos and videos, and make video calls. KTZ is launching paid access to Starlink satellite internet from November 2026. Exact tariffs have not yet been announced.
WHICH SERVICES WILL REMAIN FREE
As reported by QR News, free Wi-Fi on trains will be retained for text messaging on WhatsApp, Aitu and Telegram. Other functions, including sending voice messages, viewing photographs and videos, and video calls, will require a paid package.
A representative of the national carrier, Anuar Muratuly, explained the introduction of the charge by the costs of maintaining the network.
"Bloggers are reporting that everything will be free. But it is worth noting that a quality service cannot be free. On every journey we check the connection. Our partner Transtelecom pays Starlink for tariffs."
HOW MUCH THE INTERNET COSTS
The satellite internet pilot project was launched back in July 2026. For now passengers are using it free of charge, however from November KTZ, together with Transtelecom, is introducing paid tariffs.
The cost depends on the package chosen. The carrier's representative assured that prices will be set taking into account the financial means of Kazakhstanis. Specific amounts have not yet been named.
HOW MANY TRAINS HAVE BEEN CONNECTED TO STARLINK
The satellite internet is intended for 1,500 carriages across 51 routes. According to the carrier, around 11 million passengers will be able to use the service.
The connection speed per passenger is 5 Mbit/s. Satellite communication allows internet use even on sections of routes where there is no mobile network.
