Information about the detention of Olympic boxing champion Daniyar Yeleussinov is being shared on social media. The Astana Police Department (PD) confirmed the fact of a road traffic accident and the detention of the driver who fled the scene, but his identity has not been officially disclosed.
WHAT HAPPENED
According to journalist Mikhail Kozachkov on his Telegram channel ‘Kozachkov offside’, two road traffic accidents involving three cars occurred near the ‘Khan Shatyr’ shopping centre. He claims the suspected perpetrator of both accidents fled the scene, but police officers caught up with the car and detained the driver.
The journalist asserts that behind the wheel of a Toyota SUV with the state registration number 001EDM01 was 35-year-old Daniyar Yeleussinov.
WHAT IS KNOWN ABOUT THE INVESTIGATION
It is reported that patrol officers suspected the driver might have been under the influence of alcohol and subsequently sent him for a medical examination.
If the medical examination confirms alcohol intoxication, the driver could face liability under two articles of the Administrative Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan — for driving a vehicle while intoxicated causing an accident, and for leaving the scene of a road traffic accident.
Possible sanctions include administrative arrest for up to 20 days, a fine of 50 Monthly Calculation Indices (MCI), and deprivation of the right to drive vehicles for a period of 7 years.
WHAT THE POLICE REPORTED
The police department confirmed that the accident did take place and that the driver fled the scene. However, the department did not disclose the identity of the detained individual.
