In the Almaty Region Court, a former police officer was sentenced in a fatal road traffic accident case. The crash occurred on the Almaty — Shelek — Khorgos highway, and three people died.
HOW THE CRASH HAPPENED
According to the Specialised Inter-District Criminal Court of the Almaty Region, the crash occurred on 23 June 2026 at the 132nd km of the Almaty — Shelek — Khorgos highway in the Enbekshikazakh District.
The defendant, who was driving a Haval M6 while intoxicated, crossed into the oncoming lane. There, the car collided with an Audi. As a result of the crash, three people died at the scene and three more sustained bodily injuries.
Earlier, a relative of the deceased, Gulzana, said on social media that the driver of the Haval M6 was a police officer in a state of alcohol intoxication. Later, the court confirmed that Abylai Zharylkasynuly is a police officer. An examination found 3.3 promille of ethyl alcohol in his blood.
WHAT PUNISHMENT THE COURT IMPOSED
The driver's actions were classified under part 4 of Article 345-1 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan ("Driving a vehicle by a person in a state of alcohol intoxication in violation of road traffic rules, resulting through negligence in the death of two or more persons").
The sanction of the article provides for 7 to 10 years' imprisonment. The court imposed the maximum term — 10 years.
In addition, the convicted man was banned from driving vehicles for life.
HOW MUCH WAS AWARDED IN FAVOUR OF THE VICTIMS
The court partially upheld the victims' civil claims. The convicted man was ordered to pay 29 million tenge in compensation for moral harm and 1,799,089 tenge in material damage.
Thus, the total amount of the awards was 30,799,089 tenge.
The sentence has not entered into legal force.
