How sand extraction is destroying the Ilek River in the Aktobe region
The FBK editorial office has received reports from residents of the Aktobe region concerned about the condition of the Ilek River. According to them, new quarries for the extraction of sand and sand-and-gravel mixtures are actively appearing along the floodplain. People fear that interference with the riverbed and floodplain system could have consequences not only for the ecology but also for the region's water supply.

The Ministry of Ecology stated that CCTV cameras to combat illegal dumping have been deemed "impractical", as waste is supposedly stored outside populated areas. The editorial board of the FBRK has learned of the details of an internal investigation at the transport control inspectorate for the Zhambyl region. According to a report dated 22 July, the internal investigation did not corroborate the corruption allegations against chief specialist Nursultan Bulatbekov, but did reveal disciplinary breaches on his part and recommended that he be held accountable.
