Teenager detained in Ukraine over false terror attack in Astana

26 August in the city of Sumy, as part of co-operation between law enforcement agencies of Kazakhstan and Ukraine, a minor was detained who is suspected of a knowingly false report of an act of terrorism in one of the shopping and entertainment centres of Astana.

WHAT IS KNOWN

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) of Kazakhstan, the detention was carried out in co-operation with the cyber police of Ukraine. During the search, law enforcement officers seized mobile phones, tablets, a laptop, a system unit and a bank card.

Digital evidence was found on the electronic devices. Among it — an account that was used to send the message, the text of the message sent and other information.

WHAT LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS ARE CHECKING

Specialists are currently analysing the seized equipment. The check is aimed at identifying possible accomplices and establishing the detainee's involvement in other similar incidents.

According to the MIA, co-operation with the competent authorities of Ukraine on the matter of further procedural decisions continues.

WHAT CONSEQUENCES ARE PROVIDED FOR

The MIA reminds that false reports of bombings, terrorism, hostage-taking and other security threats entail serious legal consequences.

The department also recommends that parents explain to children the rules of safe and responsible behaviour on the internet and pay attention to suspicious activity on social networks and messengers.
