Women in the Karaganda region are being refunded for unlawfully paid abortions.

Women in the Karaganda Region have started to get their money back, paid for termination of pregnancy services that should have been free under the compulsory social health insurance scheme. Over 3 years, 775 cases of double payment have been identified, totalling 22 million tenge.

WHAT THE INSPECTION FOUND

According to the prosecutor’s office of the Karaganda Region, the supervisory body carried out inspections to verify compliance with the law in the field of compulsory social health insurance (CSHI).

During the inspection, instances of unjustified collection of money from women for termination of pregnancy services were uncovered. In accordance with the legislation of the Republic of Kazakhstan, such services must be provided free of charge under the CSHI system.

HOW MANY CASES WERE ESTABLISHED

It was established that insured female patients were unable to exercise their legal right to free medical care and were forced to pay for services using their own funds.

Over the last three years, 775 cases of double payment for medical services have been recorded. The total amount of unjustly collected funds stood at 22 million tenge.

WHAT MEASURES HAVE BEEN TAKEN

Following a representation from the prosecutor’s office, 218 women have had their money returned, totalling 7 million tenge, in the name of Әlihan Bөkeyhan.

It is noted that the process of returning funds is ongoing.
