Two citizens of Afghanistan have died as a result of an armed clash on the Tajik-Afghan border. The State Committee for National Security (SCNS) of Tajikistan reported that the men illegally crossed the border and, according to the committee, were involved in drug smuggling.
WHAT HAPPENED
According to the SCNS, the incident occurred in the Fathobod area of the Panj rural community in the Jaihun district. The deceased, the committee claims, were natives of the village of Barzangi in the Imam Sahib district of Afghanistan's Takhar province.
Security forces ordered the men to surrender, but, according to the SCNS, they offered armed resistance. During the ensuing exchange of fire, both Afghan citizens were killed.
WHAT WAS FOUND AT THE SCENE
Following the clash, the SCNS said a Kalashnikov assault rifle, a Makarov pistol and two backpacks containing 17 kg of hashish were seized. Other items were also found, though their list was not provided in the statement.
Criminal cases have been opened in connection with the incident under several articles. These include large-scale illegal drug trafficking, smuggling, organising illegal migration and illegal handling of firearms. The investigation is ongoing.
WHAT IS KNOWN ABOUT AFGHANISTAN'S POSITION
There has been no position from representatives of the Taliban movement, which controls Afghanistan. No further details about the Afghan side's reaction have been reported either.
THE DRUG SITUATION ON THE BORDER
According to Tajikistan's Drug Control Agency, in the first six months of 2026, there were 7 armed clashes with Afghan smugglers on the border with Afghanistan. As a result, the agency reports, 17 Afghan citizens were neutralised, and 601 kg of drugs were seized from 18 individuals.
In total, 1513 kg of narcotic substances were confiscated on the Tajik-Afghan border in the first half of the year. This is 179 kg less than in the same period of 2025.
THE SITUATION ON KAZAKHSTAN'S BORDER
Kazakhstan's border services also contend with drug trafficking. According to the Border Service of the National Security Committee (BS NSC), in July 2026, 39 cases of illegal movement of narcotic substances were suppressed on the country's state border.
