The Rector of Makhambet Utemisov West Kazakhstan University, Nurlan Sergaliyev, has been detained on suspicion of abusing his official powers.
WHAT IS KNOWN ABOUT THE DETENTION
As reported by lawyer and public figure Bauyrzhan Zaki, the information about the detention was conveyed to him by university staff.
According to him, Nurlan Sergaliyev was detained on suspicion of abusing his official powers. It is also reported that investigative actions, including searches, are being carried out at the rector's place of work.
Furthermore, Sergaliyev is a deputy of the regional maslikhat.
WHO IS CONDUCTING THE INVESTIGATION
It is reported that the criminal prosecution is being carried out by the Anti-Corruption Service of the Department of the National Security Committee (NSC) for the West Kazakhstan Region.
The investigative actions may be related to suspicions of embezzlement of funds allocated by the state to the university for the development of science. However, there is no official confirmation of this information at the time of publication.
