Police officers detained suspects in the theft of 1 million tenge from a pensioner in Karaganda

A 94-year-old resident of Karaganda lost 1 million tenge after a visit from two women who claimed to be social workers. Following the incident, police officers detained the suspects, and a pre-trial investigation is being conducted against them.

HOW THE THEFT OCCURRED

According to Polisia.kz, at the end of June 2026, a 94-year-old local resident contacted the police department named after Kazybek Bi of the Karaganda city police department. She reported that two unknown women, who introduced themselves as social workers, had come to her apartment.

According to the pensioner, the visitors told her about an alleged exchange of old banknotes for new ones. After the homeowner showed them where she kept her savings, the women left the apartment. Later, the victim discovered the loss of 1 million tenge.

WHO WAS DETAINED

A criminal case has been opened regarding this incident. During operational search activities, criminal police officers, including after reviewing CCTV footage, identified the suspects and detained them.

As reported by the police, the detainees are residents of Almaty. A pre-trial investigation is currently underway.

The police are checking the detainees for possible involvement in similar crimes committed in the Karaganda Region and other regions of Kazakhstan.

WHAT THE POLICE RECOMMEND

The Police Department (DP) of the Karaganda Region urged citizens to exercise caution and regularly warn elderly relatives about common fraud schemes.

The police recommend not letting strangers into the house, regardless of who they claim to be, not handing over money to strangers, and not disclosing information about where savings are kept. In case of doubt, citizens are advised to immediately contact the police by calling 102.
