After a road traffic accident (RTA) in the North Kazakhstan Region (NKR), a car passenger who was intoxicated attacked a nurse from the ambulance team. A criminal case has been opened regarding the incident.

WHAT HAPPENED

According to the North Kazakhstan Region Police Department (NKR PD), on 23 June, near the Chudesai River in the Shal Akyn district, a Lada car overturned. Officers from the patrol police battalion and an ambulance team arrived at the scene of the accident.

During the work of the emergency services, one of the two car passengers became aggressive. According to police, a 62-year-old man, who was intoxicated, struck a 37-year-old nurse on her legs, arms and stomach.

WHAT MEASURES DID THE POLICE TAKE

To stop the unlawful actions, officers from the patrol police battalion had to use physical force. The man was detained and placed in a temporary detention facility (TDF).

A criminal case has been opened regarding the assault on an ambulance worker. The legislation provides for a penalty for such a crime ranging from a large fine to imprisonment.

WHAT THE INVESTIGATION ESTABLISHED

As reported by the NKR PD, the investigation established that all three individuals in the vehicle were intoxicated.

The driver of the car — a 52-year-old resident of the district — was found guilty of an administrative offence. He was sentenced to 20 days administrative arrest and disqualified from driving for 7 years.

CONTEXT AND SIGNIFICANCE

Attacks on medical workers while on duty continue to be recorded in various regions of Kazakhstan.

For example, in March 2026 in Almaty, a criminal case was opened after a man threatened an ambulance crew with a knife during a call-out. The medics had to take shelter in a flat and wait for police to arrive.

In October 2025 in Atyrau, an attack by an intoxicated man on ambulance staff inside a vehicle was reported. Procedural measures were also taken in this case.

In the Zhambyl Region, a court found a local resident guilty under Part 2 of Article 80-1 of the Administrative Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan ("Obstruction of the lawful activities of medical and pharmaceutical workers") after he insulted an ambulance paramedic while on duty.

Another high-profile incident occurred in Turkestan, where a man beat a paramedic who had come to attend to his pregnant wife. Despite the injuries sustained, the victim refused to file a police report and reconciled with the attacker.
