Kaspi.kz commented on information that ATMs can be used to find out about other people's instalment plans and credit debts. The bank explained that the function is intended for repaying loans for other people. However, journalists noticed an inconsistency in the bank's response.
WHAT KASPI.KZ SAID
According to krisp.kz, on 20 October the press service of Kaspi.kz explained why ATMs show information about debts when an individual identification number (IIN) is entered.
"The loan repayment service by IIN allows you to make a payment for another person, for example, to help a relative if they cannot do it themselves. This possibility is provided for by the terms of banking service," the bank said.
Kaspi.kz also stated that the client's surname, first name, patronymic and other personal data are not displayed on the screen.
WHAT JOURNALISTS NOTICED
Journalists at krisp.kz drew attention to the fact that the borrower's surname is indeed hidden, but their first name and patronymic are visible.
Earlier, a reader of the publication discovered that when someone else's IIN is entered, the ATM shows instalment plans and outstanding debt amounts. The total amount of loans can also be seen.
WHY QUESTIONS AROSE
An IIN is personal data, but Kazakhstanis often provide it in hospitals, banks and when receiving public services.
Therefore, a person who knows someone else's IIN can use this function and see information about debts.
Kaspi.kz explained the purpose of the service, but the question of displaying the client's first name and patronymic remained without clarification.
