A fire broke out in a rubbish dump at the solid municipal waste (SMW) site in the Baikonyr area. Emergency services have been called in to extinguish the blaze, and work at the scene is ongoing.
WHAT HAPPENED
According to the Ministry of Emergency Situations (MES), the fire started at the SMW site in the Baikonyr area on Alash Highway. Following notification of the fire, resources from the MES and the local executive body (LEB) were dispatched to the scene.
Rescuers began tackling the fire immediately upon arrival. Operations are currently ongoing, and the situation is under control.
WHAT RESOURCES ARE INVOLVED
Approximately 100 personnel and 47 units of specialist equipment have been deployed to extinguish the fire.
According to the department, the forces involved are carrying out work to contain and extinguish the fire at the site.
WHY EXTINGUISHING THE FIRE IS COMPLICATED
As reported by the MES, extinguishing the fire is being hampered by heavy smoke and the specific characteristics of burning solid municipal waste. These factors make the work difficult and require the use of specialist firefighting methods.
