The parents of a 6-year-old boy have stated that their son contracted hepatitis C after a blood transfusion at the Almaty Region Regional Children's Clinical Hospital.
WHAT HAPPENED
According to the TV channel KTK, the child's parents claim that the boy was admitted to the Almaty Region Regional Children's Clinical Hospital with bleeding after returning from a trip to Turkey. Following an examination, he was diagnosed with immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) and received a blood transfusion.
The child's father believes it was during this procedure that his son may have contracted hepatitis C.
HOW THE PARENTS FOUND OUT ABOUT THE DIAGNOSIS
According to the father, after the initial treatment, the child was referred to the Scientific Centre of Paediatrics for further examination. There, tests were carried out, and a PCR test for hepatitis C came back positive.
Following this, the child's father sent a letter to the Presidential Administration, asking for the situation to be monitored.
WHAT THE HEALTHCARE DEPARTMENT SAID
The press service of the Almaty Region Healthcare Department reported that an investigation is underway in response to the complaint.
The department stated that specialists are reviewing the medical documentation, compliance with standards of medical care, and all the circumstances of the incident. Final conclusions and a legal assessment will be provided following the investigation by the authorised state bodies.
