In Kaskelen, a court hearing has begun into the case of a 66-year-old kennel owner who is accused of causing grievous bodily harm through negligence after dogs attacked an 11-year-old schoolboy.

WHAT HAPPENED

According to the television channel KTK, the incident took place in June 2025 in the village of Zhalpaksay. According to the investigation, a pit bull and two Rottweilers, kept on the grounds of a rehabilitation centre, ran out onto a football pitch where children were present, and then attacked 11-year-old Maxim.

As a result of the attack, the child sustained multiple wounds to his head, face and body. It is reported that the boy was saved by a passer-by, who killed two of the dogs.

WHAT THE CHARGES ARE

The investigation believes that the kennel owner failed to provide adequate fencing of the territory and constant supervision of the animals.

Prosecutor Zharkyn Kaptagayev told the court that, according to the investigation, the accused knew of the dangers of keeping large-breed dogs but failed to take the necessary measures to prevent a possible threat to those around him, including minors.

THE POSITION OF THE PARTIES

The defendant does not admit guilt. He claims that the children allegedly provoked the dogs, and that the attack, in his words, took place on the territory of the kennel. Furthermore, the man stated that, in his opinion, the animals in question could not have caused the serious injuries.

The victim's mother, Yekaterina Burmistrova, said that after the attack her son no longer goes outside and is embarrassed by the remaining scars.

WHAT CLAIMS HAVE BEEN MADE IN COURT

Lawyer Arman Sharipov said that the child requires further plastic surgery. According to him, the treatment involves several stages.

The representative of the injured party also stated that a civil claim has been filed seeking around 4.5 million in material damages and 10 million in compensation for non-pecuniary damage.

WHAT STAGE THE CASE IS AT

The accused is under a written undertaking not to leave the place of residence. He is being tried under Part 3 of Article 114 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan ("Causing grievous bodily harm through negligence").

The man could face a substantial fine or up to one year in prison.
