The court has reduced the sentence of the former head of the National Chamber of Entrepreneurs (NCE) "Atameken," Ablay Myrzakhmetov. The Committee of the Penitentiary System (CPS) has confirmed that the convict's previously imposed sentence was replaced with a more lenient one.
WHAT IS KNOWN ABOUT THE COURT'S DECISION
According to Shyndyk.kz, Ablay Myrzakhmetov, previously found guilty by the court, is no longer in the penal colony. According to the publication, he is serving his sentence at his place of residence under electronic monitoring.
The CPS confirmed that the court had made a decision to commute the sentence. The department stated that the convict's punishment was replaced with a more lenient form. However, the CPS noted that the consideration of such matters falls under the exclusive jurisdiction of the judicial authorities.
It is noted that following the court's decision, Myrzakhmetov is serving his sentence at his place of residence under electronic monitoring.
CONTEXT
On 10 May 2023, the Anti-Corruption Service (Anti-Cor) reported the detention of Ablay Myrzakhmetov. According to the investigation, he was suspected of fraud and inciting a businessman to give a particularly large bribe, allegedly in exchange for assistance in securing the businessman's relative's exemption from criminal liability.
In December 2023, the criminal case was sent to court. During the trial, the prosecution stated that, according to the investigation, the case involved the transfer of $30 million. Ablay Myrzakhmetov himself was charged with fraud.
In May 2024, the court found Ablay Myrzakhmetov guilty of fraud on an especially large scale. He was sentenced to 5 years in prison with confiscation of property worth 5.8 billion tenge.
In September 2024, Anti-Cor reported that during the pre-trial investigation, funds amounting to 7 billion tenge had been returned to state revenue.
In 2025, Ablay Myrzakhmetov applied to the court with a request for parole. In January, the court refused to commute the sentence, and in May, it became known that he had submitted a repeat request with a similar petition.
