A Chinese court has sentenced 67-year-old Wang Huimin, a former senior official in the anti-corruption unit of the state securities market regulator, to death with a two-year reprieve. He was found guilty of accepting bribes totalling more than 436 million yuan ($65.4 million).
WHY THE OFFICIAL WAS CONVICTED
According to OCCRP, citing the state news agency Xinhua, the sentence against the former official became known on 28 October 2026.
The court established that from 1998 to 2025 Wang Huimin used his official position to grant unlawful advantages to companies and individuals.
The official held various positions in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region and the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC). In exchange for monetary rewards, he helped interested parties resolve matters related to business activity and fundraising.
WHAT SENTENCE THE COURT IMPOSED
The court sentenced Wang Huimin to death with a two-year reprieve.
Such a sentence means that the convicted person will not be executed immediately. Under Chinese law, after the two-year term ends, the death penalty is commuted to life imprisonment.
Thus, the imposed punishment provides for a reprieve of the capital sentence with subsequent replacement by life imprisonment.
