In Astana, a 23-year-old man has been sentenced to three years in prison for fraud and dissemination of deliberately false information. He published a fabricated story on social media about alleged violence during his military service and collected money under this pretext.
WHAT THE INVESTIGATION ESTABLISHED
In February, the man anonymously posted on Threads, claiming he had allegedly been subjected to sexual violence while serving in the military. In the post, he also stated that his life was under threat, asked users to help him with money to leave the country, and attached bank details for transfers.
After a user reported it, the police launched an inquiry. During this, it was established that the man had never served in the military, and the published story was untrue.
HOW THE MONEY WAS COLLECTED
To receive the money transfers, the convict used the bank account of a 17-year-old acquaintance, who, it is reported, he misled. In two days, more than 15 money transfers were received into this account.
During the investigation, the man admitted that he had made up the story with the aim of obtaining money.
WHAT DECISION THE COURT MADE
The sentence was handed down by the Inter-district Criminal Court of Astana. The court found the man guilty of fraud and dissemination of deliberately false information, imposing a sentence of three years' imprisonment.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs urged citizens to carefully verify information spread on social networks and not to transfer money to strangers. The department recommends trusting information from official sources.
