The Akimat of the Bukhar-Zhyrau District of the Karaganda Region has commented on the water supply situation in the village of Kushoky following residents' appeals to the President. The response states that the temporary deterioration in water quality occurred during the commissioning of new water supply networks, and that specialists are currently continuing work to stabilise the system and awaiting the results of laboratory tests.

WHAT IS KNOWN

In response to an official request from the editorial board of FBRK, the akimat reported that the water supply networks of the village of Kushoky have been in operation since 1963, and since 2025 their balance holder has been KGP «Botakara su қozhalyғy».

According to the akimat, due to the high degree of physical wear and tear on the networks and frequent accidents, a project to build new water supply networks began as early as 2022. The customer is the Construction Department of the Bukhar-Zhyrau District, and the contractor is KazEuroStroy LLP.

Under the project, 20 km of water pipeline, 24 km of intra-village networks have been built, four wells have been drilled, and clean water reservoirs and other engineering infrastructure facilities have been constructed. Since 2025, consumers have been gradually reconnected to the new networks.

WHY THE WATER QUALITY DETERIORATED

As reported by the akimat, in June 2026, during the commissioning of the new water supply networks, the contractor KazEuroStroy LLP did not fully carry out the flushing of the pipelines and the preparation of the water supply system for operation. This, it is noted, led to a temporary deterioration in the organoleptic properties of the drinking water, including its turbidity.

To address the problem, KGP «Botakara su қozhalyғy» carried out flushing of the water supply networks and chlorination of the water. During the work, drinking water was delivered to residents.

WHAT IS KNOWN ABOUT THE WATER QUALITY NOW

The akimat reported that the quality of the supplied drinking water has significantly improved. However, final conclusions regarding its compliance with sanitary requirements have not yet been presented.

According to district authorities, specialists from the sanitary and epidemiological service took water samples for laboratory testing on 25 and 29 June 2026. At the time of preparing the response, the results of the analyses were still awaited. The akimat noted that, if necessary, additional measures will be taken to ensure the water quality meets established sanitary requirements.

It was also reported that work to ensure a stable and high-quality water supply is ongoing, and the issue is under the special supervision of the akimat of the Bukhar-Zhyrau District.

CONTEXT

Earlier, residents of the village of Kushoky recorded a video address to President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, stating that after nearly two weeks of water supply disruptions, dark-coloured water with a sharp, unpleasant odour began to flow from the taps. According to the villagers, this water was unusable for drinking, cooking, and household needs.
